Police have recovered a man’s body hours after he failed to resurface from a Gold Coast river on Thursday morning.
Police divers discovered the man’s body in the Nerang River at around 11am, around four hours after witnesses saw a man fail to resurface, a Queensland Police Service spokesman said.
Police had been called to the water near the bridge between Chevron Island and Surfers Paradise at 7.10am, after reports a man was struggling in the water.
Multiple witnesses saw the man swimming in the water, before he went under and was not seen resurfacing.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the devastating find.
The death is being treated as non-suspicious.
Residents in the area took to social media to share pictures of helicopters, jet skis and police boats all involved in the frantic search earlier in the morning.
A witness said police were stationed on both sides of the Nerang river, near Surfers Pavillion and on Chevron Island.
