Schoolchildren protest climate change inaction at Liberal Party HQ in Sydney

Hundreds of school-aged children have protested outside Liberal Party headquarters in the Sydney CBD, claiming the devastating NSW bushfires were “supercharged” by climate change.

More than 200 schoolchildren, parents and teachers have protested in front of NSW Liberal Party headquarters today over inaction on climate change that they say has “supercharged” the recent devastating bushfires.

Teenagers, mostly high school aged, skipped school to join crowds on William St in Sydney’s CBD, pushing for action on climate change.

Kids held signs that read “coalition is making me middle-aged at 16” and “some people just like to see the world burn”.

“I want climate action, we need climate action, this is an emergency,” 16-year-old student Sian Smith said.

“Bushfires must never happen again.”

One older ex-teacher presenting a speech and said protesting was “far more important than being in school.”

Another 16-year-old student told The Daily Telegraph that “climate change is just bad.”

“Islands are going to go underwater with rising sea levels, a lot of people are going to lose their culture,” Tony Dwyer from Newtown said.

“Climate change is going to affect lots of people.”

“We’re here outside the liberal party headquarters to get our point across,” 16-year-old Tully Horneman said.

“They aren’t doing enough anything about change.”

“We need things to be a way that is sustainable for our future, we need more eco friendly products,” 16-year-old Tanisa Chowdhury said.

“We can’t trust our government, this party is not hearing us and that’s why we’re here at the Liberal Party headquarters.

“They are suppressing our voices, no one is listening.”

Asked if they were planning on going back to their school in Blacktown after the protest both girls simultaneously replied with “no”.
