Works to establish a new laneway in Geelong’s CBD are ramping up after multiple delays hindered the project.
Demolition work has commenced at 184 -186 Ryrie St to create a link between Union and Market streets, with a construction zone established and excavators operating on site.
The $2.3m project – designed to enhance pedestrian safety and improve the usability of the CBD – has experienced multiple delays, but is expected to be completed by the end of this year, according to a Victorian Government spokesperson.
The project was first flagged in the government’s Laneways Action Plan (LAP) in 2018, and listed as a key action in last year’s Central Geelong Framework Plan.
It was originally slated to be finished by June 30 2024. No reason was given for the delays.
“Inspired by Melbourne’s iconic laneways, Geelong’s Laneways Action Plan aims to create new pathways and improve connectivity throughout the city,” the project outline said.
“By enhancing existing lanes and introducing new corridors, the plan will play a vital role in boosting Geelong’s liveability and economic prosperity.”
The two CBD businesses previously located at 184-186 Ryrie St – Noodle Box and Curls & Swirls – were forced to vacate their respective properties in January after the government acquired their premises.
Noodle Box moved just down the road to 105 Ryrie St, however Curls & Swirls announced via social media that their last trading day was January 28, due to “circumstances beyond our control”.
Unlike the Dennys Place laneway project which links Malop Street through to Little Malop Street, this new laneway will not be a pedestrian-only strip, as traffic will continue to travel on Ryrie St.
