Strap in for a ‘big fat funny show’ bound to have audiences of the Empire Theatre bellowing with laughter, as British comedian Russell Howard debuts in the Garden City.
An international sellout, Howard’s hilarious antics continue offstage, spilling on screen across six seasons of The Russell Howard Hour and now his podcast Wonderbox.
Howard told The Chronicle he was eager to get his hands on the region’s infamous fried chicken during his visit on November 19.
“I’m looking forward to doing the gig, but that’s really a second because this chicken has really been bigged up,” he said.
A self confessed ‘big talker’, Howard said he prefers to spend his pre-show time getting a sense of the community he’s performing in.
“I really like having a coffee and walking around the place, I kinda get loads out of that from talking to locals and having a bit of a yarn with the lighting and sound people backstage,” he said.
“I don’t like the whole ‘I must be with myself’ because you see a lot of comics who walk out on stage and go ‘so the show is about’ and it’s just this regurgitated kind of monologue.
“So I’ll probably hang out by ‘rooster’ and see what’s what.”
Despite only visiting the country back in February, Howard said audiences can expect to see a fresh show.
“I really love following my own nose comedically, for instance we have a really bad knife crime problem in the UK and we have nine year old kids carrying knives,” he said.
“I remember when I was nine, my brother and I once sellotaped our arses to see if we could fart out of our mouth and god how different it must be.
“I like the idea of making a joke out of something kind of deep like that, to kind of illuminate a point.”
Howard also welcomed his first child in 2024, which has kept him on his toes and opened his eyes to the curious world of children’s nursery rhymes.
“I wasn’t aware how creepy nursery rhymes were until I started having to learn them as a 44-year-old man, they’re just mental,” he said.
Following his trip down under where he’s only performing shows in Toowoomba and Hobart, Howard will embark on another tour of live shows throughout the Nordic countryside in 2025.
Limited tickets to Tuesday night’s show are still available and can be purchased via the Empire Theatre website.
