A man has been charged more than three months after he allegedly crashed into a family on their afternoon bike ride, killing their nine-year-old son and seriously injuring the boy’s father.
Police allege the driver, a 47-year-old Ashmore man, was drunk and speeding when he allegedly ploughed into the family on October 23, 2024.
The driver was charged on February 5, 2025 with manslaughter, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death or grievous bodily harm while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance and excessively speeding, and did drive under the influence of liquor.
The family was riding on e-bikes near Robina Town Centre when the car allegedly struck one of the bikes carrying the nine-year-old and the father, while the mother and brother watched on in horror.
The boy and his father were both rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital, but the boy died in hospital on October 24.
The driver has been remanded in custody and is set to appear at Southport Magistrates Court on March 6, 2025.
