It is alleged the two girls, both 15, tried to run away from the scene but were stopped and held down by a nearby resident on Lucas Street before police arrived.

Police said the Hyundai had been allegedly stolen in late January from a house in Smithfield.

The two girls suffered cuts and abrasions during the crash and were both taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

Photos show the pair in a distraught state while being treated by paramedics at the scene as shocked residents watch on.

Wearing ripped jeans and an Adidas hoodie, one of the girls was flanked by two paramedics while walking into an ambulance while the other girl in a grey shirt burst into tears.

They have both been released from police custody pending the investigation.
