Debris found in water as search continues for missing plane

Debris has been found off Cape Moreton during the search for  a missing light plane that took off from Caloundra yesterday.

UPDATE:

A MAJOR search-and-rescue operation is still under way this morning after a light plan that took off from the Sunshine Coast was reported missing yesterday.

Authorities commenced the search in waters near Flinders Reef off Moreton Island after a mayday call from a light plane, which was heading from Caloundra to Tangalooma Island Resort, was received about 4.30pm.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is leading the search, joined by a number of vessels from the Coast Guard, Volunteer Marine Rescue, the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter and five fishing trawlers that were in the area.

An AMSA spokeswoman said debris was found in the water about 10pm off Cape Moreton, but it's yet to be confirmed if it belonged to the missing plane.

An update on the search is expected within the hour.

EARLIER:

A MASSIVE search-and-rescue operation is under way for a missing light plane that took off from the Sunshine Coast.

Authorities are searching waters near Flinders Reef off Moreton Island after a mayday call from a light plane was received about 4.30pm

A State Government-owned rescue helicopter is conducting a search of the area.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said the plane with two people aboard was flying from Caloundra to Tangalooma on Moreton Island.

Water Police, Volunteer Marine Rescue and rescue chopper are also involved in the search.
