MORE than 220 people have signed a petition to stop a proposed commercial and residential development at Bridgeman Downs, just one week after the application was lodged with council.

On June 27, DTS Group Qld Pty Ltd — Urban Planning lodged a development application for a service station, food and drink outlets, child care centre and 39 townhouses at 415 and 427 Beckett Rd.

On July 3, Natascha Schwartz started an online petition to Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner to stop the development.

Within 17 hours, 229 people have signed the petition.

In her petition Ms Schwartz stated, “Many of us have chosen to live in Bridgeman Downs because of its surrounding bush land and green spaces” and she said these would be compromised by the development application.

“Not only will this development remove a significant amount of our limited remaining green space and bushland but it will also increase traffic, noise levels, parked cars along the streets, bring potentially unwanted visitors to our area and affect our property values.

“These issues aside, there is simply no need for additional fast food outlets, service stations and townhouses in our area.

“There are numerous service stations and fast food outlets within a 5km radius of our suburb at both Aspley and Albany Creek.

“We accept that the proposed development area was marked for potential development but the commercial nature of this development is completely unnecessary.”

In its report lodged with council, DTS Group states “the proposed development would offer a high degree of customer amenity and convenience by way of its high profile, easily accessible location and simple design.

“The proposed development would service current and future local residents as well as passing traffic.”

It further stated, “the area surrounding the site is representative of a community in transition”.

“The site is ideally positioned within a large cluster of developed and greenfield emerging community sites that are intended to accommodate both low and medium density housing suitable to the surrounding landscape.

“This means that new residents moving to the area will be in need of a wide range of high quality, accessible facilities.”

The Beckett Rd project is proposed to be delivered in four stages on the 18,160sqm site.

Stage 1 will be a single-storey service station with attached coffee drive through, a drive-through restaurant, and 42 car parks.

Stage 2 is a 110-place two-storey child care centre with 22 car parks, and a single-storey restaurant with 35 car parks.

The two-storey townhouses, comprising three dwelling types, will be built over two stages — 10 in stage 3 and 29 in stage 4.

These latter stages also include a total of 86 car parks, and formal communal open spaces in both areas.

The proposed site currently has two houses, which will be demolished to make way for the development.

The development application is impact assessable and will be publicly notified.
