The luxury Brisbane bayside home of former LNP member and Senate candidate David Goodwin was destroyed by fire on Friday.
The upper level of the two-storey home on Waterloo Esplanade in Wynnum collapsed only minutes after the building caught fire about 2pm on Friday.
Mr Goodwin, his wife Belinda and their nine children – aged between four and 20 – were understood to be inside the property when the fire started.
All escaped unharmed and watched from across the road as their home burned down.
Mr Goodwin told Nine News Queensland: “Got the whole family out. Belinda and all the kids and the dog. You soon learn that family’s what counts.”
The Goodwins were understood to be only weeks away from finishing renovations on the home.
It’s understood several tradesmen who were helping finish the work to the property were also inside but escaped unharmed.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said firefighters in a cherry picker worked to extinguish the blaze alongside crews on the ground.
QFES firefighter Eric Bell said there were a total of eight fire trucks which eventually brought the situation under control.
“The house next door also got damaged but the crews brought that under control before it got out of hand,” Mr Bell told Nine.
The property sustained significant damage and will almost certainly require demolition.
Crews were still present at the scene late yesterday to monitor any hotspots which could reignite.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
The fire caused minimal damage to a neighbouring property on Waterloo Esplanade.
Fire crews were still present at the property about 7.30pm, monitoring the house and ensuring there was no risk of hot spots reigniting.
