The long-awaited Coomera Connector project is facing another setback, with stage one of the major Gold Coast road upgrade pushed back several more months.
Works on the stretch of the Coomera Connector – sometimes referred to as the second M1 – between Coomera and Nerang were slated to begin mid-2022, but has now been pushed back to later in the year.
Member for Bonney Sam O’Connor blasted the delay, saying it was a “completely ridiculous situation” and “another (delay) to the project, which is already one year overdue”.
It was understood the delay was largely due to a holdup with federal government environmental approvals.
“The direct quote from the minister (Mark Bailey) was, ‘construction will begin by the middle of next year, which is just nine months away’,” Mr O’Connor said.
“The public environment report, which was meant to be released mid this year, has now been pushed back to the end of this year.
“After criticising the LNP ad nauseam before the last election for proposing a four-lane road, the summary business case now confirms that the entire stage one of the Coomera Connector will be a four-lane road.,” he said.
“This is after a massive blowout of $600 million. We are now getting less road for more money.”
Transport Minister Mark Bailey confirmed major construction on the project would commence “following Federal environmental approvals”.
“I look forward to delivering this congestion busting project for the growing Gold Coast, alongside billions in major upgrades on the M1 and Gold Coast Light Rail Stage three,” he said.
