A woman in her 50s has been rescued after a near-drowning incident while snorkelling off a popular Whitsunday island.
BMA CQ Rescue were called to Whitehaven Beach just before 12pm Thursday, July 17, after a woman suffered breathing difficulties while swimming.
The rescue helicopter landed directly on the beach and stabilised the woman before flying her to Mackay Base Hospital for further treatment.
BMA CQ Rescue Pilot Leigh Wilkinson said the mission demonstrated the critical need for rapid aeromedical response in isolated areas such as the Whitsunday Islands.
“Whitehaven is one of the most beautiful and remote parts of our region,” she said.
“In situations like this, where time and access are major challenges, our rescue helicopter can make all the difference.
“We were able to get to the scene quickly, land safely and ensure the patient received the urgent critical care she needed.”
