Whitsunday police appeal for information on Cannonvale shopping centre assault

An elderly man at a shopping centre and a young woman lining up outside a nightclub became victims of violence this week, and police need your help to catch one of the perpetrators.

Whitsunday police are asking anyone who witnessed a disturbance at Cannonvale’s Centro shopping centre at the weekend to come forward with information and help them bring a violent offender to justice.

Officer in charge Senior Sergeant Nathan Blain said a 75-year-old male security guard was assaulted while asking a person to leave the shopping centre about 12.50pm on Sunday, August 15.

Police are following a number of leads but are appealing for anyone with footage or information to call them on 07 4948 8888 or make a confidential report via Crime Stoppers.

The incident was one of four assaults in the Airlie Beach area over the past week.

A 22-year-old Moranbah man allegedly challenged multiple people to fight and assaulted a 21-year-old Eimeo man in the main street about 1am on August 14.

A 55-year-old Sarina man allegedly assaulted the manager of a licenced premises on the esplanade after being refused service about 10pm on August 13.

Also on the 13th, about 8.50pm, a 23-year-old Eungella woman allegedly bit a 20-year-old West Mackay woman after a fight in a queue outside a main street nightclub.

The women were not known to each other.

Senior Sergeant Blain said all three of these offenders were charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and banned from the Airlie Beach Safe Night Precinct.
