Man unleashes ‘unprovoked punches’ in Airlie venue

POLICE have issued a warning to partygoers after responding to two fights in the Airlie Beach Safe Night Precinct within hours.

About 1am on Saturday, a 38-year-old man from Hay Point allegedly threw multiple punches inside a licensed premises in the Airlie Beach Safe Night Precinct.

Whitsunday Police Sergeant Gary Hiles said the man "appeared to be unprovoked".

He was issued with an infringement notice for public nuisance.

About an hour later, police were called to a second unrelated altercation involving a 32-year-old man from Paddington, Sydney.

Sgt Hiles said police attended the altercation in the main street where a man had allegedly been assaulted.

The Paddington man was "identified as being the main aggressor and instigator", according to Sgt Hiles.

He was issued an infringement notice for public nuisance.

Sgt Hiles said bad behaviour on a night out would not be tolerated.

"Police are urging all persons that are attending the Airlie Beach Safe Night Precinct to drink responsibly, look out for their friends and family who are out with them and don't drink and drive," he said.

"Any person caught being violent or aggressive in the main street could be fined and banned from the Safe Night Precinct."

On Saturday about 10pm, a 36-year-old Proserpine man was pulled over by police on Waterson Way.

He allegedly returned a BAC of .05.

An hour later, about 11pm, a 25-year-old Cannonvale man was pulled over on Shute Harbour Rd.

He allegedly returned a BAC of .091.

Both men were given notices to appear at Proserpine Magistrates Court at a later date.
