An Airlie Beach party boy was given a brutal insight into what life in jail would be like while he stood in the supreme court dock after he was busted with a large amount of MDMA.

“You’ll live in a cell with another male … perhaps a violent man … a cell not much bigger than the dock you’re standing in,” Justice Graeme Crow told Jordan Robert Thompson.

“That man will be the senior man. He’ll sleep on the bed, you’ll sleep on a mattress on the floor.

“He’ll step over you when he needs to go to the toilet.”

Whitsunday detectives and the Townsville dog squad had raided Thompson’s Airlie Beach home on November 19, 2021 uncovering 11.588g of pure MDMA in 46.88g of substance that had been separated across 20 clip seal bags – the street value was between $3200 and $4600.

Justice Crow told the 25 year old it was the commercial aspect of his crime that ordinarily compelled a custodial penalty – and Crown Prosecutor Joshua Phillips was pushing for 2.5 to 3 years jail to serve seven months.

It was also accepted some of the drugs were for personal use.

“You’re future hangs in the balance right now,” Justice Crow said.

“Even though you’re a large fellow for 25, you will by no means be the big guy at the prison.

“It’s a pretty unpleasant place … for any person, let alone a young person.”

On Thursday Thompson pleaded guilty to aggravated MDMA possession, as well as possessing drug-related items including scales and pipes.

Mackay Supreme Court heard he entered early guilty pleas and was a trade qualified electrician with a full time job at a mine near Collinsville.

Thompson had also returned four clean urine tests since June 2022 and the court heard he had to undergo regular drugs tests as part of his employment. He had also since engaged with Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Services.

“When you see a young tradesman with skill whose employer speaks extremely highly of him … places me in a very difficult position because society generally require courts to fashion sentences to deter persons from getting involved in the commercial exploitation of drugs,” Justice Crow said.

Justice Crow added that usually meant a jail term with actual time behind bars but this needed to be balanced against the fact he was young and with a limited drug history.

Ultimately Thompson was jailed for three years with immediate parole. Convictions were recorded.
