A newly formed community group has taken a significant financial hit after a “low-life” broke into its headquarters and stole several valuable items including an off-road motorbike.
The not-for-profit Echo Park Speedway Association has been left to pick up the pieces after a recent break-in at its freshly rebuilt Collinsville track caused extensive damage and the loss of vital equipment it cannot afford to replace.
Police said the offenders forced entry to the Scottville Road facility some time between August 4 and August 14 by ramming a locked gate with a vehicle.
They then interfered with a lock to access a shed, from which they took items including radio kits, tools, fire extinguishers, a quantity of alcohol and soft drink that had been purchased for an upcoming race meeting, and a blue 2010 off road Yamaha motorcycle with the number ‘51’ visible on its side.
The club has now launched an online fundraiser in the hopes the community will help it recover and continue its season.
“With only two race meetings under our belt, with the third meeting planned for next weekend – Saturday, August 21, the club is not financial enough to replace the items that some low-life thought they had a right to take,” the fundraising page, created by Sharon Saxby, reads.
With a target of $8000, the club received more than $1500 in donations within a day of launching its appeal.
