Amanda Marie Hume sentenced for drug driving

A Queensland woman was caught drug driving on a probationary licence while on a suspended sentence for other drug-related offending. Police asked that she go to jail but a magistrate gave her ‘one last chance’. See why

A Whitsundays woman was told she would not get another chance to avoid prison time as she was facing court for the fifth time for drug driving.

Amanda Marie Hume, 57, reoffended when she was caught drug driving while on a probationary licence in Cannonvale on August 11.

Prosecutor Lachlan Perry said she had marijuana and methylamphetamine in her system.

Mr Perry told the court that Hume was on a 18 months suspended sentence for other drug-related offending in 2022 and asked the court to consider giving her real prison time.

PD Law solicitor Terry Gray told the court that Hume had been a heroin user previously but had managed to stop and was solely using marijuana.

Mr Gray asked Acting Magistrate Michael Bice to consider imposing a probation order and no prison time.

“Why should we give a 57-year-old woman a probation order, she’s likely to breach it,” Mr Bice said.

Mr Gray said Hume would benefit more from getting the ongoing support of corrective services.

Mr Bice told Hume that with her history, it was within range to send her to jail but that he would give her “one last chance”.

Hume who pleaded guilty in front of the Proserpine Magistrates Court to drug driving was sentenced to a 18 months probation order, her suspended sentence was extended for a period of nine months and her driving licence was disqualified for nine months.

The conviction was recorded.
