If you like boating, camping, fishing, or anything automotive, you could be in for a treat as two major retailers progress plans for new stores in the Whitsundays.

BCF and Supercheap Auto are slated to become two of the three tenants of a new showroom precinct planned for opposite Whitsunday Plaza along Shute Harbour Road in Cannonvale.

Whitsunday Commercial Centre first submitted plans for its showroom to the Whitsunday Regional Council in June 2021, with councillors recommended to approve the project at the ordinary meeting on Wednesday.

This is despite Whitsunday Plaza owner, Vicinity Centres, submitting a request that council block the development, alleging it was “inconsistent” with the Whitsunday Planning Scheme’s code for major centre zones.

“(It) excludes showroom from the list of envisaged land uses ... that is to accommodate a wide range of uses ... in an active and vibrant mixed use environment,” Vicinity Centres’ general manager Warren Taylor stated.

“Approximately 17,000 sqm of site area ... will be accommodated by only four tenancies.

“If this precedent was to continue, there will be little variety in the type and scale of uses and therefore the ultimate intent of the Major Centre Zone code will not be realised.”

If the new BCF and Supercheap Auto stores are approved to be built at the corner of Galbraith Rd and Shute Harbour Rd in Cannonvale, the developer must fork out $378,900 in infrastructure charges to help pay for new traffic lights. Picture: Documents submitted to Whitsunday Regional Council

Mr Taylor also hit out at traffic woes, adding the intersection of Galbraith Rd and Shute Harbour Rd already “operat(ed) at capacity during peak periods resulting in long delays”.

If the showroom is approved, Whitsunday Commercial Centre must pay $378,900 in infrastructure charges to help fund traffic lights to manage traffic, as well new footpaths.

The 7167 sqm project site includes 74 carparking spaces with access via Central Avenue plus a left-only entrance off of Galbraith Park Dr.
