A new direct flight from the Whitsundays has just been announced, which would give locals direct access to Australia’s famous vineyards.

Jetstar announced on Monday they would start operating direct flights to Adelaide three times a week from September 2024.

The low-cost carrier is to be the first company operating direct flights between the two destinations.

Jetstar’s Executive Manager Jenn Armor said the company expects these new flights to be “hugely popular”.

Whitsunday Coast Airport CEO Craig Turner, had told this publication late last year that the airport was looking at adding two new direct destinations in 2024, with one now announced to be Adelaide.

“It is important we be proactive in taking every opportunity to explore new routes that would instantly boost the Whitsunday region’s economy,” Mr Turner said.

Mr Turner had also mentioned the airport’s ambition to open up direct destinations overseas, still in partnership with Jetstar as they start operating more advanced aircraft, the A321neos.

“This is what we’re planning towards and it may be three, four, five years away, but we need to do the work (now) to understand what infrastructure we need,” Mr Turner said adding that changes to the airport’s Master Plan would be brought forward to the Whitsunday Regional Council early this year.

The flights will go on sale in February, with fares starting at $149, and cheaper sales fares are expected to go live on the website as soon as the flights are available for booking by the end of February.

“I extend my thanks to the entire airport team, our partners, and our Whitsunday community,” Mr Turner concluded.
