The Airlie Beach community is getting a new fire station but already there are concerns about the proposed location.

The new station will likely be built at the intersection of Macarthur Dr and Shute Harbour Rd in Cannonvale and Councillor Jan Clifford is raising alarm bells.

“Residents around there have been sent letters but this is already a problematic intersection,” she said.

“It’s left in, left out.”

Mrs Clifford is worried residents in the area will be disturbed by flashing lights and noise where the fire trucks are activated at night or in the early morning to go to jobs.

Mrs Clifford said the community needed a new station, but she wanted the surrounding residents to be “properly informed” and not “railroaded” into acceptance.

She said the proposed location could well be the best option.

“Whatever the people want, I’ll support,” she said.

“At the end of the day, it’s their town.”

The state government has committed $7m to the replacement station and QFES Commissioner Greg Leach said it would be an important asset for the service.

Our crews do an exceptional job working with the community to prepare for and respond to a wide range of challenging incidents and disasters,” he said.

“A new, modern facility will allow our firefighters to continue to deliver a high-standard of fire and emergency services to Airlie Beach, Cannonvale and surrounding areas.

“Looking to areas of growth in the region is a key consideration when looking for a new site for the fire station.

“Queensland Fire and Emergency Services will continue to engage with the community on the project, with final completion anticipated in 2024.”
