Four-storey apartment building among developments planned for The Cove

A subdivision would clear the way for developments including a four-storey apartment building.

Developers are forging ahead with plans to build more housing at Port of Airlie, with a proposal before Whitsunday Regional Council’s May meeting aiming to clear the way for new development lots at waterfront site The Cove.

Council officers have recommended the approval of an application from developers Meridien to subdivide 5331m2 of land at 9-17 The Cove Road, Airlie Beach, into six residential lots.

Proposed Lots 1 to 5 are intended to be used for individual dwelling houses, consistent with existing developments at The Cove.

Proposed Lot 6, however, would be used for a four-storey apartment building, containing 19 three-bedroom apartments and a 40-space basement car park.

The council placed the development application on public notification between March 3 and March 25 2021, receiving one public submission.

Council officers concluded the proposal was “generally in accordance” with the Planning Scheme, and recommended it for approval subject to conditions.

The subject site is currently approved for 10 multiple dwelling unit/accommodation units and 10 community title lots.
It currently houses a Port of Airlie sales office and temporary yard used by Port of Airlie’s landscaping contractors.

The application before the council this week is for the subdivision only. Any building works would be subject to further approvals.
