Whitsundays rallies behind family devastated by fire

THE Whitsunday community is rallying behind a family with two young children who lost everything when a fire tore through their home.

At 2.20pm on Monday, emergency services rushed to a "fully involved" house fire in Wills Crt, Cannonvale.

Four fire crews battled the blaze, which was under control by 3pm.

The fire gutted the home leaving a family, including a nine-year-old daughter and five-year-old son, without any belongings.

Family friend Majella Ennis sprung into action when she heard about the fire and launched a GoFundMe page to help raise funds for the family.

Ms Ennis said even though the family had only lived in the region for about a year, the community had rushed to help them.

In just 12 hours, more than $1100 has been raised.

Ms Ennis said she had also been inundated with messages from residents asking how they could help and where they could drop off donations.

"When there's been previous fires and people have lost everything, I know everyone gets together and helps out," she said.

"I'm overwhelmed by the amazing support (from) the community.

"Everyone has just kind of, whether it's $20 or anything, has got behind this.

"It's amazing, especially after the year that everyone's had."

A fire crew returned to the house on Monday night to dampen down the site and they were expected to return again this morning.

Speaking yesterday, a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said a fire investigator had been contacted to determine the cause of the blaze.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said the fire was not suspicious.

Genius 121 Childcare in Cannonvale is also taking donations of clothes, toys, toiletries, non-perishable food and other small items.
