Bruce Highway closed south of Bowen as fire jumps road
The Bruce Highway has been blocked off and traffic is being turned around as fire blazes both sides of the road in North Queensland.
The Bruce Highway has been blocked off south of Bowen as five fire crews battle blazes on both sides of the road.
Police are turning around traffic and urging motorists to avoid the area near the Jochheim Rd and Bruce Highway intersection because of the smoky conditions.
A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson said the fire was under control as of 5.10pm, after crews first arrived at 3pm.
The fire earlier jumped from one side of the highway to the other while crews waited for a grader to arrive to create fire breaks.
Long delays are expected.
