Wannabe sea snake joins in holiday fun at community pool

Swimmers at a Whitsunday pool were shocked to find a sunbathing snake joining in for swim practice, giving the term code brown a whole new meaning.

Families were spending a relaxing lunchtime at the Proserpine Swimming Pool when about 12.30pm a brown snake slithered into the water.

Local mother Lucy Kilgannon had taken her son and three-year-old daughter to the pool to while away time on the school holidays when a little girl noticed a brown snake basking in the sun near the water’s edge, close to the kids’ play area.

“It went in … gross,” Ms Kilgannon said.

“There were a couple of people on the other side of the pool and they got out really quick.”

Ms Kilgannon estimated a crowd between 20 to 30 onlookers gathered around the water’s edge as the snake same across the water, climbing over lane ropes with ease.

Two men, brandishing pool noodles, helped “usher it away” from the onlookers.

A Proserpine Pool spokesperson confirmed the wannabe sea snake was removed from the pool, which remained operational this afternoon.

Ms Kilgannon said her son was unaware of the incident, playing with his friends, but her daughter thought it was cool to see the snake swim.

“Pool staff were great, they kept everyone away as much as they could and told people coming in not to go to that area,” Ms Kilgannon said.

This comes days after a 4.5m crocodile was pulled from a Proserpine River boat ramp near Conway and just a few weeks after a crocodile was spotted basking in the sun near the popular Cedar Creek Falls swimming hole.
