Airlie Beach Race Week organisers are forging ahead with a 2021 event despite Covid-19 restrictions in south east Queensland, Victoria, and New South Wales halving the number of entries.

What was to be a record field of 173 boats for the week-long regatta decreased dramatically with the announcement of the latest lockdowns, but those remaining are keen as ever to hit the water for the first race on Friday, August 13.

Whitsunday Sailing Club organisers said the reduced field included Queensland sailors, as well as those from interstate who were able to get to Airlie Beach ahead of the lockdowns.

It is the second year in a row the sailing club has put in a mighty effort to provide the chance to compete, amid the Covid-induced cancellation of major regattas across the country, and they put this down to the support of boat owners, their crews, family and friends.

Event Chairman Ross Chisholm said his committee was committed to giving those who are able to attend the best event they can, but also felt for those boat owners, skippers, crews and supporters who missed out.

“These people made a substantial commitment to being here, many being forced to miss out for the second year in a row,” Mr Chisholm said.

Competitors and spectators can expect the same measures and restrictions as last year to ensure a Covid-safe event for the 33rd running of the regatta.

The onshore program includes daily prize-giving and live entertainment at the Whitsunday Sailing Club.

Or why not book a spot on the official spectator craft ‘MV Nancy Wake’ for the best view of all the on water action, with races every day from August 13 – 19 (except the Monday, August 16 Lay Day).

Tickets to the annual Long Lunch and Wine Tasting are all sold out, but dinner reservations are available at the 20 Degrees South Bar & Restaurant every night via email to events@whitsundaysailingclub.com.au
