500 guests have a ball at 2021 Proserpine Show fundraiser

A glittering marquee at Proserpine Showgrounds was the place to be on Saturday night as younger generations embraced a much-loved local tradition.

A dedicated young volunteer committee has raised more than $30,000 to keep their local agricultural show going strong, by hosting the biggest party Proserpine has seen in years.

The 2021 Proserpine Show Ball lit up the showgrounds on Saturday night, with 500 guests gathering in their finest black-tie attire to drink and dance until the late hours.

The first event of its kind for 25 years, it was all thanks to a group of five young women with a passion for promoting Prossie’s agricultural heart.

All aged in their early 20s, Brooklyn Lade, Grace McDonald, Georgia Camm, Indy Lade, and Meghan Wilson put in a huge effort to pull off the sold-out event, including getting local businesses on board to donate raffle prizes.

“We’re all third or fourth generations of Proserpine families and we love the community and want to support it,” Georgia said.

“We’ve all been away to uni and hosted events like college balls and cocktail nights, and we’ve come back and thought – Proserpine doesn’t really have anything like this.

“It’s something our parents used to talk about all the time.

“It’s an old tradition but we’ve found lots of generations are getting behind it.”

Funds raised will go towards upgrading and maintaining infrastructure at the showgrounds ahead of the agricultural show – returning this year in June after its cancellation last year because of COVID.
