Gold Coast’s bold bid to steal some marquee events for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics has only ignited debate – old and new.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner promised to fight “tooth and nail” against the Glitter Strip’s threats to steal some events from Brisbane, fearing the loss of swimming in particular would allow the state government to walk away from plans to build the $2.5bn arena in inner-city Brisbane.
This would leave the city saddled with the outdated existing Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Boondall, a venue Cr Schrinner said was long past its use-by date.
“To have an inner-city venue means that people can do things before and after the event – it generates jobs, it generates economic activity,” Mr Schrinner told a council meeting on Tuesday.
There are increasing concerns rising construction costs means the $7.1bn allocated 50-50 by the state and federal governments two years ago for 2032 Games venues is no longer enough.
That could lead to the state deciding it cannot afford to build both a new stadium and the arena, which is proposed for Roma Street Parkland.
While Mr Schrinner congratulated Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate on his advocacy to get swimming and other venues moved to the Coast, Mr Schrinner noted the long-time mayor was an early Games sceptic.
Readers were quick to pile into the conversation, with many again questioning the value of the Games at all.
Others insisted it’s time 2032 becomes a truly Queensland event, while many were left bemoaning the politics which appear to be slowing things down.

It looks like someone is treading on someone else’s vanity project.

If whinging was an Olympic sport, we’d be gold medal winners
Reg_AU
Ummm, do the pollies and others realise that the Olympics are about sports people competing against like minded people?
Laidley
Haven’t you all woken up yet that by all of the bickering, to and throwing. indecisions and debates that the majority of the Qld population and not to mention State and Federal Governments, don’t really want the Olympics here in 2032 as it was thrust upon us by then Qld.
Share it around

Remember those Commonwealth Games held back in 2018? Two events were held in Brisbane – Track Cycling and shooting. Was there a long-term outfall from holding these events in Brisbane? Share the love Brisbane, like the Gold Coast did a few years ago.
Allan
It makes sense to be on the Gold Coast and is in line with what we were told when the Games was first proposed. It was supposed to use existing infrastructure and be shared around the regions
TerryW
Give the Olympics a real Australian flavour by holding the swimming events in the surf at the Gold Coast. Holding the track events on grass cow paddock and housing all competitors and officials in tents.

Just another politician seeking someone else to fund their pet projects…. It make perfect sense to use the existing facilities across the whole of SEQ.
Axe the Games
John
scrap the whole nonsense now, we are broke, why can people not understand that?
Derek
Simple. Cancel the Olympics

I don’t care about the games anymore. It’s a complete waste of money that is urgently needed in so many other areas.
Sophie
What a mess. This has disaster written all over it.
It’s all a mess
Darryl
How can anyone say all these projects are fully funded when construction costs are rising every day. You only have to look at CRR. If this venue costs more than $2.5 billion what state taxes will have to go up to pay for it? Thankyou to the SEQ Council of Mayors for inflicting this mess on the whole State.
Andrew
It’s all about the money, and it is the rate payers that pay. Don’t concrete over our precious green spaces and don’t spend all our money! Our kids are struggling to buy a home as it is!
Zee
My rates had better not go up because Mr Schrinner wants the Olympics. I don’t. I want the council to concentrate on council duties that are supplied to rate payers. The Olympics is just a waste of money on a 14 day sporting carnival.
Kenneth
Give it totally to the Gold Coast and DON’T build a stadium at Victoria Park!!!
