Three weather systems tracking to combine over QLD bringing rain dumping

A combination of three weather systems could be whipped up bringing an “unusual” rain dump of up to 100mm for the southern half of Queensland.

Widespread rain will sweep across South East Queensland early next week.

Three separate weather systems are set to combine over Queensland at the end of the week and could result in several days of heavy rain and possible storms.

Southern Queensland could be in for a rain dump of 50 to 100mm, with both Monday and Tuesday dubbed as the “days to watch”, leaving the Ekka’s first few days – which starts on Saturday – at risk of becoming a gloomy show opening.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the state is largely dominated by a high pressure system bringing clear, sunny weather to inland parts of the state and showers on the coast due to an onshore flow.

“As the high shifts eastwards we may see an increase in shower activity in the north tropical coast, so we may see from tomorrow some falls into the 30 and 40mm and isolated spots of 50mm or more,” the bureau’s Daniel Hayes said.

“There will be some fairly heavy rainfall totals for that area, a bit above average but not unusual or unheard of.”

However, there is a potential for two troughs, one from the Coral Sea tracking close to the coastline and an upper level trough moving across the west, combining to create a drenching for the southern half of the state.

“The expectation from late on Sunday through to Monday and Tuesday one or both (troughs) could enhance shower activity – looking to the southern end of the coast in the Wide Bay down to the south east,” Mr Hayes.

“The potential is if all systems line up together we could see falls of 50mm to 100mm rain which is unusual for the time – it would be above average for the time.”

Mr Hayes said the state will likely see enhanced and persistent showers over the three days with the potential for some storm activity on the coast in SEQ and northern New South Wales.

Temperatures are also set to rise a few degrees above average for much of the state, allowing some Queenslanders to removed a layer after freezing temperatures gripped the state for much of July.

“Overall from today both the maximum and minimums will be a little warmer, clearer skies inland will warm it up during the day while lingering cloud in the eastern parts will raise the temperatures a couple of degrees above the average,” Mr Hayes said.

“It is still winter we will see some cooler single figure minimums particular in the southern parts of the state but closer to a little above average.”
