QUEENSLAND has recorded its coldest morning of the year, with the weekend’s ‘cold burst’ dropping the mercury more than 8C below average for parts of the state.

This morning Applethorpe recorded a low of -2 degrees, some eight degrees below the town’s May average of 6.1C.

“It was the coldest place in the state and the coldest temperature we’ve recorded this year,” Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Peter Markworth said.

Oakey reached a low of -0.2C, which follows another low of -0.4C recorded there on Saturday.

Dalby, Gympie Warwick and Kingaroy all endured single digit lows this morning.

Meanwhile, in Brisbane the mercury fell to 11.6C – more than 2C below its May average of 13.8C.

“(Brisbane) got to its lowest of 10.4C on Saturday morning.

The chilling temperatures came courtesy of a ‘cold burst’ which hit the state this weekend, yanking temperatures into the negative for the first time this year.

“We saw two negative temperatures on Saturday, one of them was Oakey, which got down to negative 0.4,” Mr Markworth said.

However, the cold temperatures won’t linger with Mr Markworth emphasising the cold snap was very much, a snap.

“You’d be hard pressed to say it’s winter yet … but it is continually getting cooler,” he said.

“We had this cold burst during the weekend, but things do look like they’re going to warm up into the week particularly toward the weekend.”

Inland districts could even see a tumultuous change in weather, with temperatures expected to soar above average later this week.

“Central districts could see temperatures get to 5-7 degrees above average by the time we get to Friday and Saturday,” Mr Markworth said.

“From Wednesday onward we expect most places around the state to be at average or slightly above average in terms of both maximum and minimum temperatures,” he said.

The long weekend’s cold snap follows what the Bureau of Meteorology says was the warmest April on record for Queensland, in terms of mean temperature.
