Storms building in Gold Coast, Darling Downs, Warrego and Maranoa regions

Residents in parts of the state’s southeast have been warned to brace for storms this afternoon, with slow-moving weather systems creeping across the border from NSW.

Thunderstorms are building around the state’s southeast, with the Gold Coast, Darling Downs, Warrego and Maranoa regions in the firing line.

Bureau Of Meteorology meteorologist Helen Kirkup said Queensland could expect some afternoon tropical storms through the Granite Belt and Eastern Maranoa area, as well as some activity near Charleville.

She said slow moving storms were also making their way from Northern NSW to the Gold Coast.

“There are no warnings out at the moment. I don’t think there is too much chance of any heavy rain happening. The main issue is the possibility of wind gusts,” she said.

Possible showers are likely to develop in Brisbane, Ipswich and Gold Coast areas this afternoon, with up to five millimetres of rain expected to fall in Brisbane, six in Ipswich and seven millimetres in the Gold Coast.

Ms Kirkup said there was the “slightest chance” of weekend storms along the coast from Wide Bay to the Whitsundays.

Flood warnings remain in place for major rivers across the state, with a Major Flood Warning for the Balonne River and a Moderate Flood Warning for he Weir River and Flood Warning for the Macintyre River catchment.

Minor flood warnings are also in place for the lower Barcoo River, lower Warrego River and Paroo River, while Final Flood Warnings remain for the Bulloo River, Dawson River and Moonie River.
