AFTER enduring rollercoaster weather conditions in December so far, Christmas is set to bring the gift of perfect weather for Brisbane.
The River City matched its hottest December day on record on Monday when it hit 41.2C in the CBD for the first time since December 1981, after the southeast was battered by wild storms and record rainfall last week.
Christmas weather forecast across Australia
‘Exceptional’ heatwave could see Australia swelter through its hottest ever day this week
But a mostly sunny Christmas Day won’t be too hot, with the mercury likely to reach a maximum of 33C.
Weather bureau meteorologist Michael Knept said conditions could be quite unsettled and quite cool.
Mr Knept said there may even be some much-needed rain on Christmas Day.
“We will potentially see rainfall on the night of Christmas Eve and throughout Christmas Day,” he said.
“In Brisbane, it will remain partly cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of showers”.
Meanwhile, Surfers Paradise will reach a maximum of 29C on Christmas Day with a possible shower as the partly cloudy day will have a 50 per cent chance of rainfall.
Maroochydore locals can expect similar conditions with a maximum of 31C, with a 40 per cent of rainfall.
Christmas week will bring hot and sunny weather across the state, although the high temperatures will weaken.
It comes after Australia sweated through its hottest day on record on Tuesday, according to preliminary Bureau of Meteorology data.
The weather bureau recorded the average maximum across the nation as 40.9C, beating the previous record of 40.3C from January 7, 2013.
A spokeswoman said temperatures tipped over 45C through much of the nation’s interior on Tuesday.
“The preliminary figures show that yesterday was the hottest day on record in Australia, beating out the previous record from 2013 and this heat will only intensify,” she said.
The bureau predicts Brisbane will hover around 30-33C for the rest of the week and reach 35C on Sunday.
