Insurance Council declares catastrophe as damage bill tops $40 million

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Rosa Hoff earlier said storms were forecast across the majority of the southeast including the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

“We have a chance of some isolated storms across the majority of the southeast region,” she said.

“That’s just some regular thunderstorm activity; so it’ll be showers with a chance of storms through there.

“Light totals are expected across those areas, only a couple of millilitres.”

Ms Hoff said severe storms with large hailstones are possible this afternoon in inland areas such as Kingaroy.

“Stretching from Toowoomba to possibly Gympie, to up to Monto,” she said.

“We are forecasting severe storms are possible and if they were to occur than we are expecting to see some significant wind gusts out of them and a chance of large hail.”

Rainfall in isolated inland pockets impacted by severe thunderstorms could reach up to 30mm.

Residents in inland areas are advised to keep their eyes on the latest weather warnings and act accordingly.

“We’re forecasting for large hail, potentially very large, so if you see a thunderstorm warning come up in your area follow the advice on it,” Ms Hoff said.

“It might just be a warning for strong winds, but if it has hail on there be concerned.

“There’s nothing wrong with being safe rather than sorry”

Earlier this month, cars and homes in the Sunshine Coast were pelted with hailstones the size of golf balls, causing an estimated $40 million worth of damage.

Ms Hoff said severe thunderstorms with hail are unlikely to reach Brisbane.
