Queensland weather: Polar blasts could deliver rare chance of snow to state’s south

Twin polar blasts are pushing a mass pool of freezing air north with meteorologists not ruling out the chance for snow in Queensland.

A burst of freezing cold weather could see a rare chance for snow in southern Queensland early next week, following the first significant frost of the year.
The slight chance of snow in Queensland and northern NSW comes as two very strong cold fronts are set to move across the southeast of the country over the weekend.

According to Weatherzone, the fronts will bring plenty of cold air and could see snow falling on top of mountain peaks in New South Wales from Saturday to at least Tuesday - with models suggesting 20-50cm of snow could fall over that period.

Sky News meteorologist Alison Osborne said it was likely to be cold enough for snow on the Southern Downs on Monday night into Tuesday morning.

“It’s likely to be cold enough for any precipitation to be snow around the Southern Downs,” she said.

“However, I can’t confirm that it will be wet enough.

“At this stage, I would say plausible, but I wouldn’t hang my hat on it with snow in southern Queensland next Monday.

“It’s a pretty dynamic weather system so certainly something we’ll keep an eye on.”

Over the coming days parts of Queensland will see the first decent frost of the year, as the temperature starts to plummet with the onset of winter.

Ms Osborne said the Southern Downs and Darling Downs could see “significant frost” in the lead up to the weekend.

“The next two mornings are already going to be very cold, but that’s generally due to the fact the winds are from the south and the sky is going to be quite clear, so no blanket of cloud,” she said.

“Temperatures are dropping quite quickly, so we’re looking at quite significant frost through, particularly the Southern Downs and broader Darling Downs on Thursday and Friday.”

Weather bureau meteorologist Felim Hanniffy said the Darling Downs and Maranoa regions will see freezing temperatures over the coming days.

“We’ll certainly see some subzero mornings through much of the Darling Downs and areas like the Maranoa region, even to parts of the central interior as well, particularly during tomorrow and during Friday,” he said.

“Areas between Charleville and Roma, around the Granite Belt and even some pockets of the Darling Downs, much of the morning temperature will be around that 1C or little bit cooler, with some areas going below zero.

“It’s probably the first real decent cold spell of the year.”

Snow fell near Stanthorpe last year, with footage captured by Stanthorpe Holiday Park shows a flurry of what appears to be snow falling in Stanthorpe along the New England Highway in Severnlea.

Regional Queensland is set for some chilly mornings over the coming days with Roma and Oakey forecast to drop to 2C on Thursday and 1C on Friday, Stanthorpe with 2C on Thursday and 3C on Friday, Charleville with 3C on Thursday and 4C on Friday, with Toowoomba recording 5C on Thursday and 4C on Friday.
