Queensland weather: Polar blast to send temperatures plunging 10C below average

Queensland is set to plunge into a cold, wet winter abyss as a brutal cold snap and unseasonable deluge of rain are expected to grip the state over coming days.

South East Queensland will experience below-average temperatures and unseasonable rain in the coming days, as a brutal cold snap is expected to make an impact.

Weather bureau senior meteorologist Harry Clark said the cold temperatures were in sharp contrast to last week’s warmer conditions, with some parts of the state up to 10C below average.

“(Wednesday night) was quite warm thanks to a bit of wind and cloud around, but southwesterly winds will bring in a few colder days starting from today,” he said.

Mr Clark said the minimum in Brisbane would drop to 8C on Friday and 6C on Saturday, Ipswich 3C and 1C, the Sunshine Coast 7C and 5C and the Gold Coast 8C and 7C.

“The winds are easing off which will allow those cool temperatures to really settle in tomorrow,” he said.

Further inland, temperatures would plummet to -3C in Warwick on Saturday, -2C in Oakey and -1C in Dalby.

“That’s a huge contrast to the warmer temperatures we saw over this past week,” Mr Clark said.

Meanwhile, as unseasonal rain comes in through the northern parts of Queensland, Mount Isa’s top on Saturday will drop to 14C and 13C on Sunday.

“Longreach will drop to max of 16C on Saturday, Cloncurry 17C on Saturday and 15C on Sunday and Boulia will be 13C on both days,” he said.

Mr Clarke said for Mount Isa it was about 10C below the normal average for this time of year.

“It will feel much cooler as winds settle tomorrow but for today we can expect winds in the southeast of 25km/h to 35km/h and gusts of 50km/h,” he said.

“We will definitely notice some blustery conditions for the rest of today.”

Mr Clark said Amberley near Ipswich dropped to 12C on Thursday (apparent temperature 10C) and the Sunshine Coast 18C (apparent temperature 15C).
