Residents west of Brisbane will swelter through temperatures 8C above average on Monday while parts of Central Queensland could get to 42C as a heatwave grips the state.
Ipswich, Boonah, Gatton, and Laidley were all forecast to hit a maximum daytime temperature of 36C today, where the average maximum for October is 28.5C.
Heatwave conditions are expected to peak on Wednesday, with Mt Isa, Camooweal and Winton getting to 42C.
It will be 40C across parts of southern Queensland, including St George and Goondiwindi, while Gatton, at 37C, and Ipswich, at 36C, will be the hottest places in the southeast.
The Bureau of Meteorology says Esk, northwest of Ipswich will reach a blistering 37c on Monday, and will remain in the mid to high 30s until Friday.
Brisbane was expected to be 32c on Monday with a slight chance of showers or a mild storm in the afternoon and early evening.
Senior meteorologist at the Bureau Harry Clark said the heat will stick around until at least Friday when conditions become cloudy and rainy with a south easterly cool wind change.
“It’s pretty much warm and sunny for the next few days … Brisbane is going for five degrees above average,” he said.
“So, it’s not record breaking, but certainly warm for October and that momentum will continue for the next few days as well.”
The forecaster said most people in the region won’t see any rain or storm activity over the coming days, with most of it expected to fall west of the coast.
“The cool change isn’t expected till Friday at this point, but also there is the very slight chance there will be afternoon showers or thunderstorms the next few days, mainly Western of Ipswich,” he said.
“So most people won’t get any sort of activity but couldn’t rule it out completely this afternoon, we’re not expecting it to be severe at all.”
