Queenslanders have woken to another morning of subzero temperatures, but there are hopes it could just be a short, sharp final blast of winter.
It was -0.1C in Applethorpe on the Granite Belt at 6am today, with the apparent temperature dipping to -2.6C.
Oakey, west of Toowoomba, felt colder at -2.7C while it was also a chilly start for residents of Wellcamp (-2.8C), Warwick (-2.3C) and Dalby (-1.2).
Across South East Queensland, Canungra was the coldest place, with the temperature dropping to 1.4C at 6am.
It was also chilly in Brisbane, which was 6.1C at 6am, and on the Sunshine Coast, which was 5.6C.
However, an early taste of spring is on the horizon with a well-above average 27C expected in part of the South East this Friday.
The weekend chill is expected to carry through to Thursday, with low overnight temperatures of 9C and 8C. But the cold snap won’t last long, weather bureau forecaster Steven Hadley said.
“It’s going to be a dry week apart from perhaps a shower or storm on Tuesday,” Mr Hadley said.
“There’ll be some overnight frost as well through inland parts of South East Queensland. We’ve got expectations of lows of around 1-2C in Stanthorpe through Tuesday, Wednesday, so definitely some frost around there, potentially around the outskirts of Ipswich and in Lockyer Valley as well.”
Brisbane residents woke to a city covered by a sea of dense fog on Sunday, but it cleared to reveal a bright, sunny and cool day.
Melissa Foster said her two children Sonny, 4, and Molly, 6, were making the most of the warmer weather on the Sunshine Coast on Sunday before heading home to Victoria this week
