Temperatures have dropped well below freezing across parts of the state with the mercury plunging to -4.8C, as Queenslanders endure a series of cold mornings.

The Granite Belt and Darling Downs was at the epicentre of the deep freeze, with the temperature dropping to -4.7C at Applethorpe just after 6.30am.

But for early risers, it would have felt more like -7.5C. It was a chilly -4C at neighbouring Stanthorpe.

It dropped to -2.3C at Warwick, with an apparent temperature of -4.7C, and -1.1C at Oakey, although it felt four degrees colder. It was -0.9 at Wellcamp, with an apparent temperature of -4.4C.

It was the coldest July morning in Applethorpe and Warwick since 2019, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Further west the temperature dropped to 1.4C at Roma, 2.8 at St George and 2.8 at Charleville. And in Capricornia and the central coalfields it was 4.6C in Biloela and 3C at Clermont.

Closer to the coast, it was 2C at Amberley, 3C at Gatton, 3.7C at Greenbank and 2.6C at Canungra.

It was 9.3C at Brisbane airport, but felt like 6.6C.

Senior meteorologist from the Bureau of Meteorology Felim Hanniffy said a significant front had moved across the southern states bringing gusty south westerly.

“The lingering effect of that is making it a bit colder,” he said.

Mr Hanniffy said it is expecting to get a bit warmer over the next few mornings.

“The air is pretty dry which makes the dew point pretty low,” he said.

“If the dew point is very low, feels like temperatures drop significantly.

“For example Amberley has a dew point of 1.3C and Brisbane 7C which is pretty low.”

Brisbane is expecting to hit a top of 23C on Tuesday, Maroochydore can expect a top of 23C Sunday while the Gold Coast is expecting a top of 23C.

The Bureau has also forecast light and variable winds in southeast Queensland with light to moderate south-easterly winds elsewhere.

It is expecting a partly cloudy in the far north with isolated showers in Torres Strait and along the tropical east coast, north of Ingham.

Mostly sunny skies will grace the rest of the state with patchy morning fog inland in the southeast and morning frost in the central, southern, and southeast inland.
