Queensland’s latest cold snap is in full force this morning, with temperatures plummeting below freezing in multiple locations.
A dry air mass that began moving across the state yesterday, delivering fresh and gusty winds, has brought with it widespread frosts.
On Thursday morning, locals in Applethorpe and Wellcamp have woken to find temperatures a chilly -2.2C, a temperature not seen since the coldest day of winter 2020.
Fresh winds and relative humidity mean the apparent, or “feels like” temperature outside is actually -4.4C in Applethorpe and -4.5C at Wellcamp airport.
In Warwick, that apparent temperature dropped to -4.8C when the actual temperature was -2C. It’s a similar story in Oakey, where it dropped to -1.9C but it felt more like -4.7C.
Further west, Roma’s apparent temperature fell to -2.4C, while it felt like -0.1C in Charleville despite an air temperature of 1.3C.
The frigid conditions stretched as far north as communities at Urandangi, near Mount Isa, and Clermont, where the apparent temperature was -1.5C.
The cold snap is expected to end by Sunday, as the high pressure system moves offshore.
