The state’s worst storm damage hotspots have been revealed, as Queenslanders are being warned to prepare for severe weather.
Data from Suncorp Home Insurance showed Maryborough was the worst place in the state, followed by Cooloola Cove, Mackay, Toowoomba and Gympie.
However in the top 10 list, Wide Bay localities were listed five times, making it the state’s worst region for storms.
Suncorp Insurance analysed more than 8500 weather-related home insurance claims across Queensland from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, to reveal the hardest-hit suburbs.
Suncorp Insurance Executive Manager Disaster Response Lilly Broodbank said as a result of weather events over the past year customers experienced everything from water ingress, damaged roofs and flooding, and in some cases were displaced from their homes.
“Our home claims data showed that rain, followed by hail and flood were the most common causes of damage to homes across Queensland,” Ms Broodbank said.
“Although some areas of the state, particularly Wide Bay, central Queensland and Toowoomba copped a battering, storms by their nature are unpredictable and can happen anywhere and anytime, so it’s vital to not be complacent and prepare your home now.”
Acting SES Assistant Commissioner Brian Cox encouraged households to do what they could to prepare.
“Simple steps like clearing gutters, checking your roof and ceiling for any damage and securing outdoor items can minimise risk before storms arrive,” he said.
“I would also encourage all Queenslanders to pack an emergency kit with essential items if they haven’t already.”
It comes as Bureau of Meteorology forecasts isolated storms across Queensland throughout the week.
