Qld weather: More rain on the way after temporary reprieve

There are sunny skies ahead for South East Queensland, but the weather bureau warns rain will soon follow. CURRENT DETAILS

The worst of the wet weather might have cleared overnight, but enjoy the sunshine while you can, because the Bureau of Meteorology has warned that the rest of the year will still be wetter than average.

Over 60mm of rain was dumped across South East Queensland on Friday night, and while drizzle continued into yesterday, it only added a couple of millimetres to the gauge.

In the 24 hours before 9am Saturday, 62mm was recorded at Brassall in Ipswich, but only 2mm was recorded in the following eight hours to 5pm.

The most significant falls were at Grandchester in Ipswich, recording 64mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am Saturday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast cloudy skies but with a “few glimpses of the sun” today and tomorrow, with only a low chance of rain before wet conditions return on Tuesday. “The heaviest of that rain will be further north along the coastal areas between Cairns and Gladstone,” meteorologist Pieter Claassen said.

“The Sunshine Coast will probably experience the heaviest of that in the southeast area but it won’t be too severe.

“And then, of course, we will still see those falls flare up throughout the end of the year.

“It will be wetter than average.”

Mr Claassen said Brisbane on Friday recorded its coldest July maximum temperature since 2008.

“We got to just 15.4C, and that record had been in place for 14 years,” he said.

“Brisbane can expect a warmer maximum temperature of 21C on Sunday.”
