Temperatures have dropped well beliow zero in multiple places across South East Queensland, with strong winds making it feel even colder.
While the mercury dipped as low as -2.2C in Oakey and Roma, locals were experiencing temperatures as cold as -5.5C due to the wind and other factors such as humidity.
While at -2.6C, Applethorpe was the coldest place in Queensland this morning, Oakey felt even colder, with its apparent temperature of -5.4C pipping Applethorpe’s -5.4C.
It comes as an increasing amount of rainfall is expected to hit South East Queensland by the end of this week.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Helen Reid said a cloud band is expected to stretch across the southeast by Friday, bringing more rain and colder weather.
“We’re expecting it will feel quite wintry by then and we will be getting more rain in the rain gauges,” Ms Reid said.
“Friday we might get up to about 5mm, Saturday probably closer to the 10-15mm and then just gradually creeping up Sunday could be around 20mm.
“By Monday we could even get to 30mm.”
Ms Reid said the steady rainfall increases are expected to continue throughout next week.
“We have a little bit of an upper system moving through Western Queensland in the next day or two and that’s going to combine with an onshore flow.
“By the time that all meets up, that onshore flow will be enhanced by the upper air and that will just increase that rainfall”.
The mercury is also set to dip to the mid-teens by Friday and won’t exceed 20 degrees until next week.
“We’re expecting those temperatures to be quite a bit cooler during the daytime and you’d be lucky to even reach the high teens,” she said.
While maximum temperatures are set to drop, Ms Reid said the minimum temperatures will be getting warmer as the cloud cover comes over the southeast
“This is because the cloud acts as a blanket overnight but stops the sun coming in during the day,” Ms Reid said.
“The minimum temperatures are expected to increase a degree of two from tomorrow onwards”.
A maximum of 21 degrees is expected in Brisbane today, with wind gusts of up to 25km/h.
This comes as a Marine Wind Warning was issued by the bureau at 4:45am today for coastal areas, including Double Island which recorded wind gusts of up to 77km/h.
The winds are set to ease by Wednesday.
