Southern Queensland has woken to another morning of frosty temperatures, with one centre recording an apparent temperature of -5.5C.

Figures from the Bureau of Meteorology show temperatures dropping into single figures across southern parts of the state, including Chinchilla which was 1.9C just after 6am but felt like -1.1C.

Oakey shivered through its coldest September morning since 2014, with the mercury plunging to -1.5C but felt like -5.5C.

At the same time, it was -0.2C in Dalby but felt like -2.5C, with its coolest September morning since 2017.

Across the southeast, the temperature dropped to 5.7C at Gatton, 5.8C at Amberley and 5.0C at Canungra.

The Wide Bay region felt the cool change, with Kingaroy waking up to 1.4C which had an apparent temperature of -0.9C.

In Brisbane, the temperature dropped to 12.4C and Greenbank, in the City of Logan, got to 7.8C.

Bureau of Meteorology’s Felim Hannify said the widespread cold snap across southeast Australia was due to a high-pressure system dragging cold air into parts of Queensland.

It is not the first day of winter-like temperatures, southwest Queenslanders also felt the chill on Monday, with the weather bureau stating temperatures were as cold as those experienced in mid-August.

But things are expected to warm up quickly, with the freezing temperatures set to subside from as early as Wednesday, with Mr Hannify stating even the Darling Downs region will spike back up to the high 20s and 30-degree days.

“We will start to see temperatures warm up pretty significantly. We will have a dry westerly come through and that weather system will bring in a drier burst of westerly winds to really lift those temperatures,” Mr Hannify said.

“Tomorrow morning will probably be still a little on the cool side, not as cold as this morning. But certainly, once we go into Thursday and Friday, we will get to the high 20s, touching 30 degrees.

“So it does mean that the fire dangers may lift as well, maybe elevate later in the week.”

Brisbane is also expected to see warmer temperatures towards the tail-end of the week.

“Certainly by the end of the week will be 29 and 30 degrees for Brisbane. So it does warm up more broadly across the southeast.”

Meanwhile, a strong wind warning has been issued across Queensland, with locals urged to take caution along the Torres Strait, Peninsula Coast, Cooktown Coast, Cairns Coast, Townsville Coast and Mackay Coast.

Wind warnings cut back to the Torres Strait, Peninsula Coast and Cooktown Coast on Wednesday.
