FIREFIGHTERS say they have contained a bushfire burning just west of Brisbane, but urge residents to follow updates closely.

A large bushfire is burning in bushland between Kruger Parade, Henderson St and Six Mile Creek in Redbank and Coutts St in Goodna.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services told nearby residents they should prepare to leave the area this afternoon.

The advice was downgraded about 5.20pm but residents were urged to follow updates closely.

QFES said fire crews and waterbombing aircraft had contained the fire and properties are not under direct threat.

However people in the area are expected to be affected by smoke throughout this evening.
