The Bureau of Meteorology have issued a warning for possible storms across parts of the southeast on Mother’s Day.

The Bureau’s Felim Hanniffy said places including the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Brisbane could receive isolated showers bringing rainfall between 20-40mm.

“That activity is wrapping around a low pressure system moving up from the south which will also bring lots of cloud cover,” he said.

Mr Hanniffy said the storms could be expected from the second half of Sunday.

“Its mostly rain which will just be a nuisance for Mother’s Day,” he said.

“Behind this trough is a dryer westerly wind coming through so by Monday we should see a complete contrast and weather with a fresher feel.”

Mr Hanniffy said parts over the Northern Tropical coast could also expect shower with rainfall of about 10-30mm.

Meanwhile, a level 5 geomagnetic storm (G5) could mean parts of southeast Queensland could see auroras (southern lights) between today and tomorrow.

“This is the highest G5 we have seen since 2003,” Mr Hanniffy said.

“But whether we see them will depend on cloud cover which we will have in the southeast,” he said.

Mr Hanniffy said tonight was the peak of the geomagnetic storm which was expected to weaken from tomorrow.

Early Warning Network Meteorologist Ken Kato said the storm had a high risk of impacts to GPS, power grids and space craft.

“The stronger the geomagnetic storm the higher the risk of impacts and this one is quite severe,” he said.

“Its ongoing but really ramped up from the early hours of this morning,” he said.

Mr Kato said four coronal mass ejections – eruptions of solar materials – had hit earth since yesterday and could continue into tomorrow.

“But I am not aware of any major impacts so far,” he said.
