Brisbane weather: Fog rolls out, storms roll in

Thunderstorms have dumped rain and hail across Brisbane and southeast Queensland, and caused train delays on the Gold and Sunshine coasts.

STORMS have passed through Brisbane and southeast Queensland, but not before delivering some healthy rainfalls and small hail.

Weather bureau meteorologist Jess Gardner said the storms had mostly passed over Brisbane by 6pm.

“We had some storms passing through from the west on Saturday afternoon, but most of those are offshore now,” Ms Gardner said.

“We have had some reports of small hail at Kelvin Grove and around the City, with more hail falling in storms further to the west.

“There are still some storms to the north and further inland, but those will steadily keep moving east over the next few hours and start to clear out offshore tonight and early tomorrow morning.”

Toowong recorded 53mm of rain in a little over an hour, while Mt Coot-tha recorded 47mm.

The downfall was enough to cause minor flooding at the Eat Street Markets at Northshore Hamilton.

Light hail was reported at Albion in Brisbane’s inner north, and west of the city.

Small hail also peppered parts of the Sunshine Coast, including Caloundra, where up to 65mm of rain was recorded at Kings Beach in less than half an hour.

The pea-sized accompanied heavy rain that arrived with a storm cell at the southern end of the coast.

Amid the wild weather, a signal issue between Robina and Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast train line forced a suspension of service between the stations for over two hours since 4.30pm.

Electricians were working to rectify the problem.

Replacement bus services were ferrying passengers between the stations in both directions until the trains were able to continue.

TransLink also reported minor delays to Sunshine Coast trains and Brisbane buses due to the severe weather.

Early this morning, Brisbane was shrouded in heavy fog this morning as temperatures cool following a week of sunny skies and warm winter weather.

The skies were thick with fog across most of Brisbane as light showers and calm winds help to settle the heavy winter air.

The Bureau of Meteorology said a combination of recent weather events was the perfect recipe for fog across the southeast this morning.

“We’ve had a lot of moisture in the air recently from light showers within the past few days,” Meteorologist Kimba Wong said.

“This, combined with quite calm, weak winds has let the moisture settle. As it cools down overnight that moisture lowers to the ground.”

BoM reported a blanket of fog settled in the northern suburbs of Brisbane from around 10pm and thickened across the rest of the region as temperatures lowered to a brisk 15.3 degrees overnight.

The fog is expected to clear as the day warms up to a high of 23 degrees, however a few possible thunderstorms will likely take its place.

“There are a few thunderstorms sitting west of Brisbane at the moment in areas around Amberley and Gatton,” Ms Wong said.

“We are expecting light showers around the Brisbane area with the potential for thunderstorms later into the afternoon and evening.”

Rain is forecast in Brisbane tomorrow before the skies clear, with more rain expected by the end of the week.

After a week of milder weather, temperatures are again expected to drop back toward single figures by the end of the week.
