Land spout spotted in southern Queensland

IT’S one of nature’s strangest phenomena, this land spout was spotted in the Darling Downs town of Nobby this afternoon.

Nobby local Georgia Findlay was visiting her grandparents when she caught this bizarre sight on camera.

“It was a pretty cool to witness,” Ms Findlay said.

“I went outside to check on the weather, and there it was. I thought it was a tornado.

“Nans empty pots flung around the yard, it was fairly scary.”

The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed the event was not a tornado, however was similar in appearance.

“It may look like a tornado, but they’re nowhere near as dangerous,” meteorologist Tony Wedd said.

“It’s a pretty spectacular phenomenon, but it poses no real threat.”

Ms Findlay said the land spout caught on camera was the first of two in a 10-minute time frame.

“The first one came and lasted two or three minutes, then it disappeared. Then the second one came and lasted four or five minutes,” Ms Findlay said.

“The second one looked like it was over someone’s house or shed… I hope it didn’t cause any damage.”

Ms Findlay said she was unsure if she would ever get to see the wind pattern again, but was excited to have experienced with her very excited grandmother.

“Nan was outside and just so amazed at what we thought was a tornado,” Ms Findlay said.

“It’s not often we get interesting weather events here, even a bit of rain is odd for us, so this really made her day.”
