Strong storms are expected to hit the southeast coast on Sunday night, with the strongest to move through Caboolture.
A band of storms was also expected to impact the Gold Coast, with the Bureau of Meteorology saying the storms were “not severe” but would be closely monitored.
The Bureau earlier today warned of the possibility of severe storms.
Weather bureau meteorologist Shane Kennedy said there was a medium chance of showers and thunderstorms in the state’s south as a weak trough moved east.
“There is the risk of severe thunderstorms for the South East today,” Mr Kennedy said.
“Mainly damaging winds and large hail with a lesser risk of heavy rainfall.”
Mr Kennedy said the higher danger was further north on the Sunshine Coast but Brisbane was also in the firing line in the afternoon and evening.
“As a weak trough moves across the South East we’re expecting that to trigger some storms over the Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley, then they’re likely to travel pretty quickly east,” he said.
“They will quite likely push all the way to the Coast and over the water.”
Storms are less likely to impact the Gold Coast.
Shower and storm activity was expected right along the east Coast of Australia on Sunday with the Early Warning Network issuing a storm alert from Cairns to Canberra.

Queenslanders will also say goodbye to cold mornings this week with Mr Kennedy expecting morning temperatures of 14C.
“We may see a brief return of some thunderstorms on Tuesday, mainly in the morning and clearing up by the evening,” Mr Kennedy said.
“Following that, we’re expecting to see a reasonably warm week coming up, potentially with just a slight chance of a shower along the east Coast from Wednesday on.”
