Winter has begun with a bang across southern Queensland, with temperatures plummeting this morning.
It was just 1C at Applethorpe at 5am, with the apparent temperature even lower at -1.2C.
Warwick got off to a freezing cold start as well, with the temperature sitting at 3C at 5am but felt like -0.3C.
Toowoomba, where it felt like 0.8C, was sitting at 5.1C as of 5am, while Goondiwindi was at 3C, but the apparent temperature was 0C.
While the apparent temperature in Brisbane was 7.9C at 7am, the actual temperature didn’t drop to single digits, sitting at a low of 10.4C.
At Brisbane Airport it got to 8.7C but felt like 6.1C, while Amberley dropped to 7.3C with an apparent temperature of 4.4C.
On the Gold Coast it was 10.9C but felt like 8.1C, while at the Sunshine Coast Airport the mercury dropped to 11.1C but felt much colder at 6.7C.
Lingering cloud cover overnight prevented temperatures from dropping as low as initially predicted for the South East, the weather bureau says.
“Brisbane only got down to 10.4C in the city and 6.6C at Ipswich, but those really cold temperatures were out in the Toowoomba area. Oakey got down to 4.1C,” BOM’s Sam Campbell said.
Mr Campbell said maximum temperatures were likely to reach around 19-20C across much of the South East today.
The Bureau also said that there have been no reports of frost across the south east region.
A trough moving across the state’s south could bring some showers to the Warrego, Maranoa and Darling Downs districts on Friday, but big totals were not expected.
The weather will generally clear on Saturday and conditions look fine into early next week.
