Parts of South East Queensland endured "out of the ordinary” temperatures overnight according to the Bureau of Meteorology, with some places experiencing their coldest November temperatures in nearly 30 years.
In Toowoomba overnight, temperatures dropped to 5.6C Wednesday night, a 27-year record November low for the city. The previous record was 6.4C set on November 17, 1995.
The extreme weather conditions are being caused by a polar jet stream colliding with a subtropical jet stream over southern Queensland.
Minimum temperature records were also set across parts of regional Queensland.
Richmond (8.8C) and Winton (11.4C) both experienced their coldest November nights in 18 years, while it fell to 9.5C in Hughenden and 11.2C in Trepell, south of Cloncurry.
It was also the Gold Coast’s second coldest November night on record, falling to 9.5C.
Meanwhile, Beaudesert fell to just 6.5C while Nambour’s minimum was 8.4C. In Brisbane it fell to 12.8C overnight and 10.8C at the Brisbane Airport.
Meteorologist Helen Reid said the unseasonably cool start to November is caused by the lack of humidity across the South East.
“Because it’s so dry, it feels a lot cooler” she said.
“Humidity is low, which helps make it feel very cold”.
Ms Reid added that the low humidity will bring sunny skies across the South East throughout Thursday.
