Brisbane weather: Heatwave sparks new bushfire fears
Winds sweeping across the state from Queensland’s arid centre will bring scorching temperatures of up to 40 degrees across much of the state next week, making for ideal bushfire conditions, authorities warn.

WINDS sweeping across the state from Queensland’s arid centre will bring scorching temperatures of up to 40 degrees across much of the state next week.
Brisbane, Ipswich and Gatton will see temperatures soar as many as 10 degrees above the average daily maximum for this time of year.
“The hottest days in the south-east will be Monday and Tuesday next week,” Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Kimba Wong said.
“Northwesterly winds are bringing warmer temperatures from further north and inland to the south-east pocket.
“The reason why is we have a trough approaching from the south-west, and just ahead of that trough the winds turn more north-westerly.
“The main concern is increased fire danger, with winds picking up and dry conditions creating a severe warning for the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.”
Yesterday, it was hot enough for tourists Lauren Nardone from New York and 2Will Peregrine from Brussels to cool off in rock pools at Granite Bay.
Swimming conditions will be even better next week, as Brisbane’s temperature hits 33 on Monday and 35 on Tuesday.
Ipswich will see 38 and 39 while Gatton will hit 40 on Monday and 39 on Tuesday.
The heat is not expected to last long, with a southerly changing bringing cooler temperatures and moisture to areas desperate for a reprieve from the scorching heat.
American tourist Lauren Nardone said she had found one way to beat the heat.
“We went swimming at the fairy pools and it was really refreshing,” the New Yorker said.
“We’ll be driving down to Brisbane so we’ll have to find some water down there to keep cool.”
