As Qld battles heatwave, here’s when storms will bring relief

A series of storms are set to snap Queensland’s heatwave – but not before potentially record-breaking temperatures in some regions.

Prepare for a heatwave: Dangerous temperatures this weekend

The brutal record-setting heatwave scorching Queensland could snap with a series of storms next week.

The outlook has prompted Allianz Insurance chief weather officer Tim Bailey to urge Queenslanders to look ahead, as an excessive heatwave masks the threat of severe storms this summer.

“Sixty-seven per cent of Australians believe bushfires are the biggest threat this summer,” he said.

“That is very worrying because it looks like we’re going to be in a La Nina season.

“There’ve been 18 La Nina phases (since 1900); 12 of those years have produced major flood events.

“We need to start thinking about cyclone proofing, flood proofing, storm proofing our houses as best we possibly can.”

The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting the current heatwave to last until late next week, when a cool change could bring a series of storms to the southeast.

“We are expecting probably multiple records to be broken early next week in the southeast interior,” forecaster Livio Regano said.

“What makes this (heatwave) particularly troublesome is how long it lasts, it probably lasts for a good solid seven days.

“If a cool change comes it’ll just produce a few storms.”

Goondiwindi will sweat through consecutive record-setting days next week reaching 45C on Monday, 44C on Tuesday and 45C on Wednesday.

The border town’s hottest ever November day reached 44C.

Gatton is expected to reach 44C on Wednesday, while Ipswich should also pip 40C.

Brisbane will reach a highs of 34C next Wednesday, while parts of the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast will reach 35C.

Mr Regano said early afternoon sea breezes would to stop coastal locations from becoming exceedingly hot.
